Item of the Week: Urban Folk Tunic

It really doesn’t matter how tall, small, curvy or lean you are – tunics are a girl’s best friend! They elongate our torsos while covering our bums. What more could you ask for? Whether with tight jeans, a skirt or cutesy shorts, you can do no wrong with a lengthy tunic.

The Urban Folk design brings together this flattering shape with one of my favorite natural images: bare tree branches. I use a deconstructed t-shirt and hand-pull the print across the soft cotton. I then sew the shape and seams, creating an external gathered hem which gives just enough volume to bring an edge to an otherwise soft shape. The concept also gives the wearer a cinch at the waist without making them feel constricted anywhere else.

So when looking for a flattering, edgy, yet comfortable (yes – it’s possible!) piece, the Urban Folk Tunic is a three-in-one dream come true!

Item of the Week: Dear Darling

It will be in the eighties in Chi-town this week – and what better way to celebrate than with a flirty summer dress! The Dear Darling is one of my favorite pieces for the warm season as it combines breathable t-shirt cotton with a fitted waist and lace embellishment.

I love the gathered waist as it’s flattering on a variety of body shapes. The design is available in my Etsy shop in a variety of colors and can also be custom made to your specifications. I layer mine with a bandeau bra, petticoat slip and a pair of vintage sandals for a look that’s fun and fresh!

Bed Rest: All Done!

Today is my first day of freedom! I am almost operating at full capacity after a seven day ‘house arrest’ in which I was to remain immobile to help with the healing of a leg and hip injury. Though I still have several weeks of physical therapy, I’m back at work, able to soak up some sun and enjoy some freedom. Continue reading

Bed Rest: Days Three & Four

Yesterday was the third day of my house arrest and I hit a wall. It was an absolutely gorgeous day and I couldn’t get my mind off of being out and about in the park with the dogs. But I held myself back – knowing that if I didn’t take the time to get better now the potential for recovery would really decline.

So I moved my rest area to the sun room and spent some time reading, finishing up the ‘custom’ page of the website and working on some embroidery. David surprised me when he got home with a vanilla/vanilla cupcake from my all-time favorite bakery, Magnolia. It was a bit banged up from his bike ride but that made me appreciate his thoughtfulness even more.

Today shaped up to be much much better.

I’m feeling less pain which means things are slowly healing. My small group leader, Bernice, paid me a visit with some delicious Indian food in hand. Yum! My mom also swung by before heading home to finish packing. Her and my dad are flying out to Poland tonight. She came through weighed down with flowers and a bag full of healthy snacks and fruit. She’s the best.

I’m about to start-up some board games with David while sipping a homemade vanilla latte. It seems like the perfect wind down for a restful Saturday afternoon.

Bed Rest: Day Two

Yesterday was an easier day – I spent less time online and more of it reading, drawing and occupying my thoughts with ideas for future designs.

Today I will admit I am suffering a bit – but not because of the injury. It’s seventy degrees outside, sunny and a Friday! If it were any other week I’d be at work for a couple more hours, would head home and then take the dogs to the beach. Then, I’d take a leisurely bike ride with David to the nearest cupcake shop for treats and coffee. Sigh. Maybe he’ll surprise me with one later today.

Despite the beautifully tempting weather I am once again using my time well. I’m catching up on Etsy lab videos and learning tons! I’ve taken copious notes and will be sharing the nuggets of wisdom later this month. I’m also at the final phase of updating the website. The custom page is outlined and only needs filling – and the wholesale sheet needs an update. After that I’ll get back to some reading and maybe some embroidery work.

But at least I have two down and only five more to go!

Bed Rest: Day One

I survived my first day of bed rest! Though around 5pm I was sure I was a gone-er. I had spent way more time on the computer than I had intended which made my eyes almost bug out permanently. Today I took a different approach and relaxed more, took photos of my bedroom and cuddled with the pets.

David was home this morning too – working on a new painting and practicing for his upcoming show this Sunday. The company helped tons! Continue reading
