A DIY Wedding

Katie & Philip's DIY Wedding 2013

When it was announced that my baby brother was getting hitched – I could barely contain my excitement! Not only was I a mega-fan of the bride to-be, I also knew that this wedding would be different. Between the creativity imparted on Phil by our family, and the uber-crafty cunning of Katie, I had no doubt that this would be a DIY wedding to remember!

The Plan:

First things first, the bride made her own handy-dandy wedding planner in which she would list all the elements that would need to come together for this rustic, meets shabby chic, affair. Delegating out tasks across the familial pool, we each had an important part to play. The Krupinski side of the family was in charge of flowers, bridal party accessories, favors, and a portion of the food and centerpieces.

By inviting family and friends to take the lead in the preparations for their special day, Katie and Philip ensured that their wedding would hold sentiment for them, and all the guests who attended.

Wedding Favors: With a little elbow grease and some heavy duty diamond tip blades, my father made over eighty drinking glasses for the guests using old soda bottles. Talk about being green! Each one was then scripted with the event date and initials of the bride and groom making them an elegant and functional wedding favor.

Centerpiece Stands: My brother and dad also gathered used wooden candlesticks and wood from a recently fallen tree trunk, and assembled the most ingenious centerpiece bases (which I plan to steal for use in my own home – shhhhh). White washing each candlestick and gluing the top to a cross-cut of the tree trunk, these homemade cake stands were used for elevating the light and whimsical baby’s breath table bouquets.

An Indie Biz: Taking a Break

Summer in Chicago: Inkling Boutique Sign "Treat Yo' Self"

Boy – is it hot outside! And beyond the naturally imposed sluggishness that creeps into my summer self, I also find that the season brings tons of distractions. Whether it’s a close friend’s wedding, long walks in the park with the dogs, swimming in the lake or festival hopping, there’s nothing like making the most of summer in Chicago!

Or so I found myself thinking on a recent weekend afternoon, as I sit sewing away at my machine. I started to fantasize about all the events, get-togethers and experiences that were taking place in my absence, when it dawned on me: I need a break!

This September will mark the five year anniversary for Pierogi Picnic, and since starting my biz in 2008, I’ve had nary a dull moment. Working full-time and running your own business is exhilarating, but exhausting work! So I’ve decided a teeny vacation from my biz will do.

But with all the time, sweat and love poured into Pierogi Picnic, I’d never dream of closing the shop or website, even temporarily. So as a compromise to myself I’ve decided to put custom order work on hold until the fall. This way I’ll have the luxury of sewing up new designs when the mood strikes – and can still sell creations that have already been photographed and posted to Etsy. But what it really means is that I can reserve my weekends off for time with family, friends and four-legged beasties.

So for those of you who have been eye-balling a custom swimsuit or sundress – know that they’ll be back in production in September 2013. Until then – take advantage of all the lovingly crafted readymade and vintage items in my shop. And if you’re not currently a fan of the Pierogi Picnic Facebook page – you’ll want to “like” it soon – as we’re going to have some big sales coming your way in August for our anniversary.

And to those who are fellow artisans and creatives – do yourself a favor too – take a break every now and then! You deserve it!

Trends: High Waisted Shorts

Summer Trends: High-Waisted Shorts

It’s no secret that I love a high waist! Though this style can be a little intimidating at first – once you start wearing things above your belly button – it’s hard to go back.

Flattering, comfy and oh-so-retro looking, the “hike ’em up” trend has now spread to shorts as well! If you’ve been hoping to give the fit a try, check out these finds and give the look a try.

Events: Summer Bazaar Fun!

Summer Bazaar 2013

This past Sunday I had the privilege to showcase my Pierogi Picnic creations alongside a collection of amazingly talented local Chicago artisans!

Setting up shop in the store and sidewalk of the new Lincoln Park salon, Smith & David, we took this tiny neighborhood nook by storm with our handmade creations, homemade soaps, hand-forged jewelry and incredible vintage finds. The weather was perfect, the clientele was chipper and the entire event had an easy breezy heir.

An Indie Biz: Design Process

Pierogi Picnic: Design Process

Designing a new garment or revamped vintage clothing item is always an adventure!

I’ve used many methods over the years. Some involved intricate illustrations prior to creation. Others were more stream-of-consciousness, just cutting and sewing and making things up along the way. Still, in other situations I’d find myself with some general ideas of what I was looking to present and forming the vision in my mind before take scissors to fabric. No matter what the method – coming up with a new design can be the most exciting, and conversely, flabbergasting thing! Continue reading

Finds: Herbivore Botanicals Skincare

Herbivore Botanicals: natural vegan mens skin care

I’m somewhat of a natural cosmetics junkie – always ready to try the latest DIY tonic or small-batch soaps. Whether makeup or bath bombs, as long as they’re natural and cruelty-free, I’m always willing to give them a try. So when I stumbled upon the vegan Etsy-based skincare Herbivore Botanicals, I knew I was sold.

Featured in an Etsy shopping guide for Father’s Day, I scooped up a men’s gift set for my hubby. “It’s an early Father’s Day present!” I told him. “But we don’t have kids” he protested. Four-legged babes count – don’t they?! Besides, I thought it would be more apt for him to try the line as it’s meant for toning the skin of those with facial hair, something I’m thankful I don’t qualify for.
