DIY: Handmade Winter Legwarmers

pierogi picnic: diy legwarmers

Just a couple weeks back much of the Midwest was engulfed in what was dubbed the “polar vortex”. With temperatures dipping down as far as negative 19 in Chicago-land, it was more important than ever to layer up to keep warm. And that’s exactly what I had to do along with millions of other folks. Slipping into layer upon layer of tights, leggings and socks, it suddenly hit me – I need some old-fashioned legwarmers! So I grabbed an old sweater and got to crafting. Within twenty minutes I was cozied up and ready to hit the great and frigid outdoors.

If you’ve been battling to keep your legs warm this season – give this easy tutorial a try! All you need is a pair of scissors, needle, thread and a chunky knit sweater. If you have any mismatched buttons lying around  grab those too for added embellishment. In just a half hour or less you’ll be on your way to a toastier, and more eco-chic you!

    1. Pick out a vintage or gently used sweater that you’d like to transform.
    2. Cut off both sleeves – leaving the original seams on the torso. Save the extra fabric to make a pillow or skirt.
    3. Roll the raw edge until you have a double fold.
    4. Grab your needle and thread to hem the fold. Start with two regular loop stitches.
    5. After making the second, pull your needle through the stitch’s loop.
    6. Pull taught and move on to the next stitch, repeating the process. This is called the “lock stitch” method.
    7. Grab a handful of mismatched buttons.
    8. Sew the first button onto the original sleeve hem – not the lock-stitched one you just created.
    9. Add more buttons and repeat on other legwarmer.

And there you have it! In just a handful of minutes you’ll find yourself donning an adorable and toasty pair of hand-crafted legwarmers! Layer them over a pair of leggings and tall boots or transform your favorite flats into winter-ready apparel. Should your one-of-a-kind accessories get dirty, simply hand wash them in the sink with your favorite eco-safe detergent and set them out to dry.

Featured Designs: Love & Lace

Pierogi Picnic: Love & Lace

I am so incredibly excited for the coming spring. I know it’s still several months away, but my mind can’t help but dream of longer days, budding trees and blooming crocuses. Perhaps it’s this longing for the season of awakening that drew my mind to the “Love & Lace” design.

Handmade using a salvaged t-shirt, this incredibly simple, yet romantic piece combines the softness of cotton and the allure of vintage white lace, to create a garment that’s both casual and eye-catching. With the versatility to be worn as either a short dress or tunic top, the “Love & Lace” design can be layered to your heart’s content.

But what about this design made me think of spring? The lightness of the fabric, coupled with the femininity of the lace makes me think of flirty frocks and less chunky knits – which is what spring fashion is all about! This specific creation also speaks to me as it’s the inspiration behind my new upcoming collection: Grey & Gold. Keep your eyes peeled for its debut this coming February! Until then – consider making this favorite a part of your personal collection.

An Indie Biz: Welcoming the New Year

2013 Pierogi Picnic Annual Business Review final

It’s been quite a fruitful year here at Pierogi Picnic – and there’s much to reflect on. Whether perusing through my Etsy sales, looking back at the conjuring of new designs, or basking in the warm glow of gleaming customer reviews, 2013 was the year where my business shined.

Thinking back over the last five years, and the endless toiling to build Pierogi Picnic’s strong foundation, this was the year where the pay offs became clear and tangible. What more could a biz owner wish for?!

So to send off 2013, while joyfully welcoming 2014, I’ve drafted up a visual graphic that looks back on this year’s achievements. Because, after all, what’s the fun of running a small indie biz if I don’t get to celebrate milestones, breakthroughs, and all the success nuggets in between!

And if you’re wondering how in the world I was able to achieve, let alone set my sight on these goals in the first place, consider giving my yearly business planning worksheet a try. Download my customizable, and totally adorable, planning worksheet below to help you get your goals on paper for the year.

Here’s to a fruitful New Year to all the indie handmade business owners out there!
