Small Space? Urban Garden Solutions!

Tis the season to start planning your 2011 edible gardens. City dwellers must overcome the myth and fear that growing veggies is only for those with a stiff mortgage and plenty of land mass. Those of us who live in apartments and high rises can overcome this obstacle by employing some creative solutions:

Urbio Vertical Garden: This up-and-coming design team is currently collecting funds via Kickstarter to turn their urban jungle ideas into reality. Their concept of magnetic and adjustable plastic planters is brilliant, modern, and functional.  Let Urbio be your inspiration. Continue reading

Sleepless in Seattle: Lil’ Vacation

Katy in her rad outfit.

The title of this post is not meant to be entirely tongue n cheek.

My closest friends and I embarked on a reunion this past week with Seattle as our stomping grounds. We had the joy and privilege to stay on a super rustic house boat that left me rockin’ till today – literally. I find myself with a mean case of vertigo and dark undereye circles…surely signs that I had a great trip!

Seattle took my breath away. The cozy neighborhoods, combined with the ever-flowing supplies of locally roasted coffee, gave me a fuzzy buzz worth gushing over. The slanted streets were filled with plaid-adorned citizenry, vintage boutiques, thrift shops, organic grocers, vegetarian restaurants and more!

Here’s a sneak peak at my favorite finds and the gals behind the times on my Flickr!

The Gift of Love: Adoption from The Anti-Cruelty Society

The best gift is the gift of love. And in the spirit of today’s holiday our family has received just that in the form of a teeny 10 month old Boston Terrier. This little ball of energy was transfered to The Anti-Cruelty Society from Chicago’s Animal Care & Control with a mean case of Bordatella. I promptly scooped him up as a foster and immediately fell in love. David soon followed and even Peanut, our resident BT Frenchie mix, has had his heart swept away.

Love is truly in the air – wishing you a very merry Valentine’s Day!

Warm Fuzzy Feelings: V-Day Dinner

This year Valentine’s Day falls on a true blue Monday. If you and your sweetie are working, but still want to mark the occasion, throw together a simple comfort food dinner tomorrow night.

My suggestion: indulgent mini grilled cheese sandwiches paired with a hearty tomato soup. To add a lovey dovey touch, use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to give the bread some whimsy. Using the leftover crusts, cut them into cubes, sprinkle with olive oil and rosemary, then pop them into a pan for a quick toasting. Meanwhile, pour your tomato soup into decorative mugs and top with your homemade croutons. Put out a rustic tablecloth and some candles and in less than 15 minutes you’ll be on your way to romance!

Extreme Makeover: Shame on Elle

Now…I’m not going to deny the heavy handed use of Photoshop throughout my Etsy shop and beyond. But there is such a thing as going too far and Elle Magazine has done just that.

By whitewashing the stunning Indian beauty Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the publication has stooped to an all-time low by forcing its homogeneous ideals on Bachchan and readers alike.

Above is Elle‘s Cover with a photoshopped inset that I created with Aishwarya’s more natural skin hue.

As mentioned, I’m not one for finger pointing, but this latest development has really stricken me with grief as it’s clear that our color-blindness continues in international media. There’s nothing more breath-taking then representing beauty of all races, ethnicities, sizes, and shapes – and Elle, along with many other mainstream magazines continues to evade this ideal by reinforcing ‘white is right’ stereotypes.

If this burns you up as much as it does me – take a moment to sign the following petition asking for Elle to fix and republish the issue with a formal apology:

Rocking NYE Naturally: Makeup Tips

Last week I made a sweeping change to my daily makeup routine and ditched all of the harsh chemically products that were in my rather large stash.

I tossed about five pounds of designer and el cheapo eyeliners, blush, shadows, lip sticks, glosses, primers, and more! It was part of my yearly pre-New Years purge. Websites like the Cosmetics Safety Database convinced me that no look is worth the mercury infused mascara or phthalate laced cheek glow.

With this in mind, I wanted to share how us super eco-divas can still rock an edgy look using natural, safe, and earth friendly products. Some of my favorite items include a hemp based line of staining lip balms by Colorganics that can be purchased at most Whole Foods, the entire line of cosmetics by Greek skincare company Korres, and the ever cute and increasingly natural brand Tarte.

The following tutorial uses a mix of the above brands to create a vintage-inspired party look for New Year’s Eve. I hope it gives you some food for thought for 2011 and beyond. Continue reading
